Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Vice President, Professional Membership and Engagement in our National Center office. The preferred location for this opening is Dallas, Texas ; however, location is flexible provided it allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.

This VP position oversees and is responsible for the strategic and operational aspects of the AHA Professional Membership and Engagement Department which encompasses global and domestic scientist and clinician members.

Numbering over 30,000 members, from 2 dozen plus specialties, 100+ countries, and spanning all career stages from early career to emeritus, this Department provides the recruitment, retention and engagement strategies which allow these members to contribute optimally to AHA's mission. The professional members serve as the foundation of the AHA's science and clinical credibility. They engage in assisting AHA in visioning the future and the future of their own specialties, planning conferences, developing patient materials, peer reviewing abstracts, grants and other scientific materials, authoring scientific stances and clinical guidelines on key issues, participating and developing mentor/ mentee experiences, and evolving into world class leaders while nurturing the next generation.

Professional Members are aligned with 16 Councils, each of which functions as a distinct professional society with their own elected leadership and programs. The Vice President is responsible for overseeing these Councils and aligning their interests across the Councils and within AHA. The Vice President creates and executes systems and processes to accomplish these above sets of complex engagement and collaboration activities within in a fiscally responsible membership dues revenue model through direct activities within the Professional Membership department and the strategic collaboration with other AHA Science and AHA departments.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Plans, and directs management and administrative aspects essential to the effective and efficient operation of Professional Membership and Engagament with its 16 Councils, their 150 plus subcommittees, and other key groups. Guides and supports their strategic planning and drives integration across Councils.

  • Evaluates on an on-going basis the execution of current strategies aimed at achieving department goals and addressing the needs of a competitive landscape.

  • Directs, guides and provides a role-model for staff in the 'best practices' in volunteer management.

  • Provides consultation and support, both individually and through other department members, to other AHA departments or non-AHA components as requested relative to issues in their programs and/or requested by leadership. Primary staff support and direction to the Council Operation Committee (COC) and its Strategic Value Proposition.

  • Directs, coaches and role-models exceptional communication, interpersonal and group skills to staff and others.

  • Develops and maintains strong fiscal control mechanisms and robust growth goals for the department.

  • Creates and maintains a departmental environment of trust, respect and commitment to co-workers and AHA.

  • Oversees the creation and management of appropriate systems for the Professional Membership and Engagement and Scientific Councils for review and approval.

  • Acts as conduit with Business Technology and Senior Leadership Team to develop technology projects.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field of study.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related experience.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of:

  • Fiscal and budgetary experience required with the ability to analyze data and interpret into narrative form.

  • Experience in strategic planning with strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal sales skills. Ability to think logically and solve problems.

  • Active membership involvement in a professional society and the medical/ scientific community and outside professionals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to think logically and solve problem.

  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 25% of the time.

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Minimum of five (5) years:

  • Professional Medical or Science Society Administration experience.

  • Science or Medical Society Membership experience.

  • Possess intellectual curiosity, embrace open collaboration, represents the organization in a professional capacity and take an energetic approach to fulfilling AHA’s mission

Compensation & Benefits

Salary:

Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials may apply.

Incentive:

This position is incentive eligible based on achieving certain targets.

Benefit Plans:

Employees scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are eligible to participate in the medical, dental, and vision plans the first of the month following 30 days of service. AHA subsidizes the medical and dental cost to ensure benefits are affordable. Eligible dependents under AHA’s group benefit plans include legal spouse, domestic partner, children under the age of 26 or who are disabled. AHA offers additional benefits like an EAP, telehealth benefit for general medical and behavioral health, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, and disability.

Retirement Plans: AHA retirement plans offer employees a way to start saving after their first paycheck. The retirement plans provides employer contributions after two years of service. If you have previous 501(c)(3) non-profit experience, within the last 5 years, at a national health agency, an institution of higher learning or a medical institution, that experience may count towards the two-year waiting period. Employees are 100% vested in employee and employer contributions.

Paid Days Off: Regular full-time and part-time employees earn Paid Time Off (PTO) based on years of service. PTO begins accruing on date of hire. Full time employees receive one paid Community Service time off day per year and are encouraged to participate in projects, programs and organizations which contribute to the health and vitality of their communities. AHA also offers 12 paid holidays per year.

Leaves of Absence: AHA offers both Short Term and Long Term Disability benefits which replace earnings if you are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness or injury. Employees are eligible for Short Term Disability after 90 days of service and are eligible for Long Term Disability after being disabled for 90 days or more. Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks off of work for a qualified leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), intermittent FMLA leaves and leave as an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA.
