Responsibilities

The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a National Executive Lead Government Initiatives based out of our National Center Office!

This position can be remote/home based.

This individual will be responsible for leading strategy to secure government grants for the American Heart Association, providing investigators with a full range of pre-award services while working with finance, legal and procurement offices to assess grant award risk. Responsible for identifying and responding to government grant opportunities for significant funding of AHA’s mission related projects. Responsible for collaborating with principal investigators to understand, prepare, and submit proposals. Responsible for establishing process, identification of project resources, developing budget guidance and ensuring compliance with government grant related regulations. Also responsible for conducting reviews of proposed projects to consider and assess grant award risk, legal and procurement policy compliance and related implementation procedures.

  • Lead government grant funding application process by working closely with program teams, principal investigators, or others to develop compelling proposals and program designs including all components such as letters of intent or support, collaboration agreements, resources and budgets that comply with funding agency guidelines. Ensures applications are routed for and obtain institutional approvals before submission and manage status of applications through the funding decision.

  • Seek and identify new opportunities for funding aligned with the AHA’s mission priorities and work with the named Principal Investigator/Project Director and team to ensure the development of compelling, accurate and timely submission, including budget development and, when necessary, collaborator engagement. Serve as the AHA point person for initial vetting of prospects to ensure alignment with government grants policy, facilitating the formal “go-no go” decision process for submitting a government grant in collaboration with teams.

  • Transition awarded projects to the Office of Funded Programs post-award team and implementation teams to ensure smooth project start-up and implementation of new grants.

  • Create and implement the government grants strategy for the AHA, including working with other teams to assess future directions for government funding for the organization. Communicates AHA government grants policy to all AHA staff and collaborators.

  • Ensure that the creation and tracking of plans, progress on opportunities and prospect information is documented appropriately in the Customer Relationship Management database.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Eight (8) to Twelve (12) years.

  • Experience developing projects or programs encompassing proposals, budgets, fiscal integrity, and statements of work.

  • Experience developing, writing, and submitting government grant applications at the federal and state level

  • Knowledge of government grant regulations.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of government grant funding agencies and application process.

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of national public health challenges and evidence-based project successes.

Preferred Experience:

  • Grant Budgeting Experience and knowledge of government budgeting principles.

  • Knowledge of government agency priorities and agenda.

  • Demonstrated program design experience.
