The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Policy Advisor in our National Center. Location of select candidate is flexible as long as it allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.
In this role, you will have lead responsibility and accountability for the AHA major initiative around healthcare payment models, conducted independently or in collaboration with other partners. This includes serving as the Association's point person and spokesperson with partners, funders, and government agency representatives.
This position will serve as the Association's primary healthcare payment models subject matter expert, and will be responsible for convening experts to inform, shape and advance the AHA's program and policy work in this space. The incumbent will manage relations with The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, (CMS) and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI.
The incumbent will work in partnership with Advocacy staff colleagues in the development of public policy fact sheet and regulatory comments. Additionally, this will include working in partnership with volunteers, academic institutions, and stakeholder groups to develop white papers, Association principles and policy positions, policy briefs and other materials that support the AHA's work.
The incumbent will be responsible for managing project budgets and procuring/overseeing contracted services and deliverables. They may also be called upon to recruit and supervise paid and unpaid interns.
As a member of the Advocacy department and team, the incumbent will be expected to participate and potential lead other intradepartmental and interdepartmental working groups and initiatives.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 6/30/2023.
*Due to the current pandemic, travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily/overnight travel*
Essential Job Duties:
Leads major initiatives, incluing expert conveneings and publication of consensus statements and recommendations.
Serves as subject matter expert internally and external to the American Heart Association. Develops policy statements (published and unpublished), regulatory comments, model legislation, policy briefs, and other material to support of AHA advocacy and programmatic efforts.
Interacts with funders, government agencies, coalitions, and/or external partners relevant to the Association's health care payment work. Represents the AHA at conferences and meetings. Speak on behalf of the AHA in areas of expertise.
Management of budget resources, contracted services, and the occassional intern opportunities.
Participate and occassionally lead in interdepartmental and intradepartmental working groups.

Advanced Degree – Master’s in Healthcare Administration, MBA, MPH or related field of study.
Minimum of eight (8) years of:
Knowledge of insurance models and systems, heath care economics.
Knowledge of health care payment models, including new and innovative value-based payment approaches.
Management of external relationships with government agencies, national coalitions, or other potential partners.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Ability to work under deadline pressures.
Ability to convene people, orient them to a shared purpose, and drive to results.
Must be able to travel overnight approx. 10% of the time.
Here are some of the preferred skills/experiences we are looking for:
5-8 years of experience working in a government agency on healthcare economics and/or healthcare payments.
5-8 years of experience working at a health insurance carrier or health plan.
Knowledge and/or experience of clinical healthcare systems.
