The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

  • Internship Duration: 1/21/25-5/2/25

  • Location: Remote

  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with rural communities, tribal leaders, health organizations, and other relevant stakeholders within ES. Coordinate culturally relevant outreach programs and initiatives to address heart health disparities among these populations with guidance and support from the Community Impact Director, Rural Health.

  • Program Development: Design, implement, and evaluate health promotion programs tailored to the specific needs and preferences of rural communities, specifically through the development of policy, system, and environmental change impact with guidance and support from the Community Impact Director, Rural Health.

  • Advocacy & Policy: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote health equity and address systemic barriers to healthcare access and quality within rural communities. Collaborate with policymakers, government agencies, and advocacy groups to advance legislative and regulatory changes that support cardiovascular health with guidance and support from the Community Impact Director, Rural Health.

  • Data: Collect, analyze, and disseminate data on health outcomes among rural populations across ES. Utilize this information to develop a Community Health Assessment to guide program development and implementation focused on rural health with guidance and support from the Community Impact Director, Rural Health.

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, rural community health, health science, or related degree are encouraged to apply.

  • Exposure to or experience with rural health promotion strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.

  • Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for completing projects from inception through final results.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.

  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
