The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

One opportunity supports the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, a banquet in its 39th year going into the 2025 event, college football coaches are recognized for their contributions both on and off the field. Each year, one top-performing coach is selected to take home the “Bear” bust trophy and claim the final title of the season: the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

While the Coach of the Year Award has been an annual tradition since 1957, The Bryant Family felt moved to educate and impact awareness around heart disease and stroke following “Bear’s” passing. The family approached the American Heart Association to create a meaningful partnership to keep “Bear’s” legacy alive while raising funds to support research.

The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through changing needs and life situations. Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

  • Internship Duration: 5/20/2024 – 8/9/2024

  • Intern must be based in Houston, TX, or the immediate surrounding area.

  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.

  • Opportunity to explore a career path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization.

  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.

  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Create promotional materials and work alongside the communications and development team to promote campaign initiatives (Fan Vote, National Auction, etc.

  • Support in managing outreach and stewardship with collegiate programs (Group of 5 programs.

  • Assist the development team in managing the collection and organization of event auction items.

  • Assist in targeting alumni audiences and promoting the Bryant Awards National Auction.

  • Assist and support the Bryant Awards Team with any additional tasks.

Qualifications

  • Basic experience with graphic design and web development programs.

  • Experience/interest in promotion, sales, or fundraising.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.

  • Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Basic knowledge of Canva.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection

  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
