American Heart Association Intern, Strategic Writing and Design-Remote in Dallas, Texas

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Under the supervision and mentorship of the American Heart Association’s Resource Center team, a student will leverage his/her writing and design skills and passion for communicating in creative ways. Ideal candidates are self-motivated, possess strong writing skills and excellent storytelling capabilities, and have experience in designing a variety of materials.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

  • Internship Duration: 1/16/2024 – 5/3/2024

  • Remote Position

  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

  • At the conclusion of the internship, the student will have an expanded understanding of how a national organization develops strategies and resources for staff and implements them in our various teams.

  • The student will assist in curating and updating content – such as toolkits, infographics, slide decks, and more.

  • The student will assist in the writing and editing of our award-winning newsletter Chalkboard – a twice-per-week newsletter that is written in a fun and engaging style and shared with more than 3,000 staff members.

  • The student will learn the benefit of strategic partnerships between other National Center teams at the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Becoming a member of our Chalkboard internal newsletter writing team, using creative writing skills to write and edit editions that simplify complex scientific information and essential Association knowledge and infusing it with humor and pop culture references.

  • Identifying areas of opportunity for new resource development.

  • Working alongside our subject matter experts to create new resources and update existing ones with the latest scientific guidance and organizational priorities.

  • Curating content on our Resource Center SharePoint site, identifying outdated information, and developing a plan to refresh essential materials.

  • Creating and leading presentations to share findings.

  • Assisting with staff presentations and training, such as our Resource Round-Up – a high-energy discussion that highlights our newest resources and how to use them.

  • Working with our region newsletter team to promote essential materials to our local staff.

  • Special projects as assigned – this may include conducting external research, surveying internal SharePoint sites, and more.

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are pursuing/or recently graduated from a Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Advertising, or Public Relations degree (or a similar field.

  • Sample writing and graphic design materials are required (please upload these materials as attachments, when applying). Examples can include: a professional newsletter, blog post, or a press release.

  • A letter of recommendation from a current or recent professor, employer, or internship supervisor is preferred .

  • Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills, including news, business, and persuasive writing.

  • Knowledge of basic journalism principles including news gathering, interviewing, writing, and editing.

  • Basic graphic design experience is required.

  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications.

  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate and non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.

  • Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

  • A firm understanding and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi Connection

  • Minimum a vailability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
