American Heart Association Executive Director - SVP Level in Chicago, Illinois

We have an excellent opportunity for an Executive Director in our Chicago office. We are seeking an inspiring leader to drive the strategy and execution of corporate revenue, communications, and health impact goals for the metro Chicago area.

The Executive Director will lead a team of approximately nineteen staff that oversee corporate fundraising campaigns, communications and marketing, community impact efforts, and administrative support. This includes providing direct coaching and supervision to three vice president and senior-level staff

The Executive Director will also develop and manage the local advisory volunteer board. This position will have a revenue accountability of approximately $11M.

To help you be successful you will have access to our award-winning learning platform the Heart U as well as various other training and support mechanisms locally and through our National Center.

Due to the current pandemic, all AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. While offices are closed, daily travel is minimal and voluntary. There is no overnight travel currently.

Offices will be reopening October 11, 2021. On this date the position will resume to being based in the local office and work will continue in the field with donors, volunteers and partners as the job requires.


  • Devise and implement the strategy and direction for the market’s unified health and revenue efforts. Assumes bottom line responsibility for metro area income and community impact goals.

  • Guide and direct team to achieve goals. Accountable for hiring, directing, training, evaluating staff.

  • Develop and manage a volunteer Board of Directors, consisting of top-level corporate executives, to guide volunteer leadership and initiatives.

  • Build powerful partnerships with volunteer, community, and corporate leaders, sponsors, and other internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop profiles on the top businesses, associations, organizations, agencies, etc. within the assigned market with a documented plan to secure their involvement. Builds relationships with key corporate leaders who can support initiatives and involve them at the appropriate time.

  • Meet with assigned staff to review programs and policies, and to recommend changes to enhance division efficiency and effectiveness.


  • 5+ years of experience in fundraising or outside sales or in a non-profit organization in a similar capacity.

  • 7+ year of experience in a management capacity. This experience may occur within the 5-year related experience requirement. Experience gained through direct internal work on AHA projects/priorities may substitute for this requirement and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Experience in attracting, recruiting, managing and evaluating volunteers, including a volunteer board preferred.

  • Strong ability to motivate/inspire others to accomplish goals.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation, and training. Skill in written communications to include clear and concise narrative reports, evaluations and similar narrative pieces.

  • Ability to read, comprehend and analyze number goals, as well as fundraising reports. Skill in use of spreadsheet/database analysis.

  • Ability to do daily travel up to 75% and overnight travel up to 35%.

  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Compensation & Benefits

We offer a base salary with the potential to earn an incentive up to 25% of your base pay. The potential incentive is based on achieving certain targets.
