The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Database Designer in our National Center office. Location of the selected candidate is flexible if location allows for cost effective and efficient travel.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is available through 6/30/2024
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing an accessible database design by analyzing data inquiry needs, ensuring security of information and organizing layout for the best user interface and access by scientists and researchers. The Database Designer is responsible for building and ensuring adherence to data management and data access policies, standards, and procedures.
Essential Job Duties:
Identify, establish, and recommend data mapping and design to standardize and harmonize large clinical datasets (real world data) from American Heart Association registries as well as other large datasets.
Design, document and help develop user interface, data integration, definitions, and data dictionaries. Collaborate with subject matter experts in clinical data and research, and external entities such as Amazon and Verily.
Assist in developing SQL database, query requirements, and data management protocols for large clinical datasets in AWS cloud environment.
May develop and document through presentations the overall project design for publication or scientific meetings.

Bachelor’s Degree - Information Technology – Database Design, Applied Math, Computational Science, Health Informatics, or related technical field.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience with database design, development, data mapping or related area.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience with real world clinical data, data management and regulatory requirements for use of data.
In-depth knowledge of cloud-based architecture; AWS background preferred.
Proficient in R and/or Python, Jupyter Notebooks, SQL.
Highly effective organizational skills, time management, responsibility, and motivation.
Must be able to travel overnight approx. 20% of the time.
Here are some of the preferred skills/experiences we are looking for:
PhD in Computer or Data Science preferred.
Reviewing data (such as epidemiological, population data, e-medical records, metabolic and related data environments), developing data dictionaries, schemas, and validation checks to design and implement databases with the capacity to scale in a cloud-based architecture.
